This 4.5-tonne test command module played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of astronauts during the Apollo program, particularly after the tragic Apollo 1 fire. The fire, caused by a spark in a wire in a 100% oxygen environment, almost halted the Moon mission. However, the boilerplate #1224 was instrumental in figuring out how to make the spacecraft safer, by introducing a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen, a lesson that proved invaluable during the Apollo 13 mission when an oxygen tank explosion forced astronauts to rely on the lunar module. This piece of history is not just a reminder of the Apollo program's resilience but also of Australia's role in lunar exploration, as the country was one of the first to receive the live television broadcast of the Moon landing. The exhibition, Task Eternal, will showcase 850 items, including the boilerplate, a parachute from the Apollo 17 mission, a rock sample box from Apollo 15, and even a customized camera used by astronaut John Glenn during the Friendship 7 mission. What makes this exhibition particularly fascinating is the inclusion of a public message etched on a wafer, meant for deep space, recorded by members of the public as part of the HUMANS project. This exhibition is more than just a display of technological achievements; it's a testament to human perseverance and the importance of testing in space exploration. From my perspective, it's a powerful reminder that even in the face of tragedy, we can rise above and continue pushing the boundaries of what's possible. The Powerhouse Parramatta, opening before the end of the year, will host five exhibitions, including a nostalgic collection focused on Western Sydney's shopping malls, but this space exploration-focused exhibition is undoubtedly the highlight, offering a unique opportunity for Australians to engage with a piece of history that has shaped our understanding of the universe.
